One of the biggest dilemmas facing the equine industry today is the need for qualified, dedicated, and knowledgeable help. The need for caring for and managing equine athletes, farms, breeding, and training operations has reached a critical level. Throughout the country, there have been programs in the prison systems, some in existence for years, where horses and humans are connected and where the healing for both begins.
Second Chances Farm, at the Lowell Correctional Institute, in Ocala, Florida, is the first and currently the only program for women. Many of the horses are donated thoroughbreds, some injured for life, others being rehabilitated for a new life, just like the women who care for them each day.

The Chattanooga Area Food Bank raised $47,000 during the 2021 HullaBOWLoo Auction. Deskrig specializes in making virtual presentations and events look more professional, and they donated their software and resources to make the auction virtual for the first time.
The annual auction raises funds and educates the community about food insecurity. The money raised will be used to purchase food for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank’s 20-county service area.
Deskrig uses integrated hardware and software solutions that enable virtual meeting attendees to engage and present at a professional level from any home office. CarolinaEast Health System hired native New Bernian Jared Brinkley as the executive director of the CarolinaEast Foundation, the charitable arm of the health system.
Brinkley joined CarolinaEast Health System on Monday, May 3 and will precept with outgoing Foundation Director Jill Thompson through June 2021, according to a news release.
Brinkley comes to CarolinaEast following a 10-year tenure in athletic development, most recently as the Director of Major Gifts at the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide Foundation. We are pleased to have Jared join our team, said CarolinaEast President and CEO Ray Leggett, in the release.
