You know, I would much rather be writing about Spring Training preparations, Cubs signings or trades, what we have to look forward to for the 2021 MLB season.
Unfortunately, right now all I have to present to you is bickering between Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association, and Maricopa County, home to 15 MLB teams during Spring Training.
Report to you on these things I must, so here goes.
Early Monday, we learned that mayors of all the Cactus League host cities plus the league’s executive director had written a letter to Major League Baseball asking that Spring Training be delayed a month.

The Major League Baseball Players Association has turned down MLB s latest proposal for a universal designated hitter and an expanded postseason field, according to MLB Network s Jon Heyman.
According to ESPN, the MLBPA was hesitant to discuss a trade of the universal DH in exchange for an expanded postseason field.
Both the universal DH and an expanded postseason field were implemented in 2020 during the 60-game regular season, which was shortened from the standard 162-game season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year s postseason field included 16 teams, with the top two teams in each division, plus the two remaining teams with the best records in each league making the postseason.

The Major League Baseball Players Association rejected the league’s most recent proposal to implement a universal designated hitter, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Monday morning in a larger, broad-reaching look at the issues facing the two parties. MLB offered up a universal DH and a willingness to rule in favor of two players on a pair of service time grievances, per Rosenthal, but in exchange it sought an agreement on expanded playoffs, the implementation of a pitch clock and a spring training trial run with electronic strike zones, among other elements.
The MLB Players Association released a statement Monday afternoon via Twitter.
Statement from the Major League Baseball Players Association regarding the Cactus League letter: pic.twitter.com/5j0vGewKC7 MLBPA Communications (@MLBPA News) January 25, 2021 “While we, of course, share the goals of a safe Spring Training and regular season, MLB has repeatedly assured us that it has instructed its teams to be prepared for an on time start to Spring Training and the Regular Season and we continue to devote all our efforts to making sure that that takes place as safely as possible,” the statement said. If spring training were to be delayed, MLB would not be able to make this decision unilaterally. It would have to reach an agreement with the Players Association, which has been adamant about starting spring training on time.
