Picture used for representational purpose only BENGALURU: With hospitals struggling to handle the deluge of Covid patients who developed breathlessness, the government has decided to set up 22 oxygen-generation plants in 18 medical institutes across the state. This comes at a time when Karnataka is reporting around 50,000 positive cases and the case fatality rate in eight districts has crossed 1%. “The idea is to ensure the 18 medical colleges are self-sufficient in oxygen production, and the process is being fast-tracked,” deputy chief minister and State Covid-19 Ministerial Task Force chief CN Ashwath Narayan told STOI. Three of the plants are in Bengaluru. The finance department has given its green signal to the Rs 62.7 crore proposal and tenders have been called.

Representative Image ANI | Updated: May 09, 2021 22:45 IST New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): Amid the surge in COVID-19 cases, the first meeting of the 12-member National Task Force set up by the Supreme Court to ensure that medical oxygen is delivered throughout the country in a streamlined manner through an effective and transparent mechanism was held on Sunday, sources said. All the National Task Force members commended the significant work done by Ministries and Departments of Government of India in augmenting the oxygen production capacities as well as in ensuring its efficient distribution, sources told ANI. The task force members also provided specific suggestions on increasing oxygen production and availability, managing the demand side of medical oxygen, and parameters on which individual health facilities could ensure economy in the use of medical oxygen, sources said.

Supreme Court sets up national task force to streamline Oxygen allocation

Asking the NTF to “commence work immediately” taking up the pressing issue of determining the modalities for oxygen expeditiously within a week, the Bench said it shall submit its recommendations from time to time. The tenure of the task force should be six months initially, it said. The court made 12-point term of reference which included assessing and making recommendations for the entire country based on the need for availability and distribution of medical oxygen and to facilitate auditing by sub-groups within each state/UT. According to an order passed by a Bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice MR Shah, the Union Cabinet Secretary will be the NTF convener and the Union Health Secretary its ex officio member. The Cabinet Secretary might nominate an officer not below the rank of Additional Secretary to deputise for him, when necessary, it added.
