Since the first Academy Awards, back in 1927, the best picture gong has been awarded to 92 different films. And do you know what? Congrats. Well done all round. Leaving aside any palaver over the rights and wrongs of each win, it s the ultimate, historic achievement that any film can notch up. At the time that they won, they were at the forefront of what cinema could do.

Yesterday we looked at the very first years of Best Picture winners, 1927 to 1930. Today, as we march through the decades, we look at 1931 to 1939.

Hard to argue with a picture that proves, once again, that MGM did indeed have more stars than were found in Heaven: Greta Garbo, John Barrymore, a gorgeous Joan Crawford (who steals the movie), Wallace Beery, Lionel Barrymore, and so on…
It’s all elegant and melodramatic and more than little stagey, but nearly 90 years later, outside of some draggy parts, it still entertains.

USC alumnus Sandy Reed’s mother Catharine Reed, the vice president of Charitable Programs at H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and the School of Dramatic Arts recently created the Sandy Reed Endowed Professional Development Fund in honor of his memory.
It was a Friday in November 2014, right after the first Chekov class of the fall semester, when Sandy emailed Mary Joan Negro, associate professor of theater practice at the School of Dramatic Arts. In his email, Sandy expressed his excitement about Chekov’s dimensional characters, such as Astrov.
France just voted to ban all short-range domestic flights that could be covered by train instead. It’s a healthy reminder that all of this our world that prioritizes cheap air travel, car commuting, the cheap and fast destruction of our planet doesn’t have to be this way.
