INTERVIEW: S court ruling on Erin-Ile, Offa land dispute must be enforced, says Samuel Alabi

  For several decades, the people of Erin-Ile and Offa, two neigbhouring communities in Kwara state, have tackled each other over the ownership of a piece of land situated between both towns. In this interview with The Cable, president of the Erin-Ile Progressive Union, (EPU), Samuel Alabi speaks about the current situation of things. Advertisement What exactly is the state of things concerning the boundary matter between Erin-Ile and Offa. I understand there was a supreme court judgment? Alabi: You will recall I addressed the press on 26th, December 2018, bringing this December 14th, 2018 judgment of the supreme court to the attention of the world, and promising to see to its enforcement. As a peaceful and law-abiding community, we have taken several steps towards this end, beginning with serving copies of the judgment on the government of Kwara state and other stakeholders including the security apparatus, and follow-up requests for the implementation. Alhaji Maitakobi said the Travelers Accident Insurance Scheme (TAIS) would assist millions of Nigerians who travelled from motor parks and garages and incidentally encountered accidents that required emergency medical attention. He explained that, “This is part of our social responsibility to assist, support and give confidence to our commuters, and also to improve the system of transportation in this country.” He urged the federal government to establish a Bank of Transportation and to privatise the federal highways for private investors to come in so that budgets on road construction could be channeled to other prevailing matters. Speaking at the occasion, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Transport, Nicholas Tofowomo, called on government at all levels to improve land transport by rebuilding the sector, which he described as a source of employment to millions of Nigerians.

He called on the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and other stakeholders responsible for regulating quality of tyres to join hands with the group in tackling the menace. Maitakobi while charging the new leaders to lead by example in handling the affairs of the association, also warned them on engaging in embezzlement, or any activity capable of threatening the peaceful coexistence of the group, and the country by extension. He specifically advised all RTEAN members to avoid night journeys going by the condition of many roads and also insecurity, just as he had charged them to abide by all traffic rules and regulations at all times.
