Four Central Massachusetts cities have secured nearly $9.8 million in federal housing aid, including for programs providing affordable housing and community development.
Fitchburg, Framingham, Leominster and Worcester all secured funding, with Worcester alone taking in $7.3 million. Most of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funding announced Thursday for those four cities and others nationally was for Community Development Block Grant Program funding, which benefits low- and moderate-income households in need of affordable housing.
Smaller amounts were given for the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, which covers building or renovating affordable housing, and Emergency Solutions Grants, which provides funds for homeless shelters.

The importance of the work done by the Sussex County Community Development and Housing Department to preserve housing can t be overstated.
Using millions of dollars through the federal Community Development Block Grant program, the department has been able to to make housing repairs to keep thousands of low- to moderate-income county residents in their homes.
Director Brad Whaley provided an update on the program during a public hearing at the Feb. 2 Sussex County Council meeting.
These core programs provide our local partners the funding they need to provide homes and vital services to some of our neighbors in need, Acting Secretary Matt Ammon said.
The Texas grants will be provided through four HUD programs: the Community Development Block Grant Program, the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS, and the Emergency Solutions Grants.
The Community Development Block Grant Program was given $246 million in funding from HUD. The program provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, and counties to develop urban communities by providing housing and a suitable living environment, the Department said.

Millions of dollars in federal funding are being used to help ensure Virginians have a roof over their heads.
On Thursday, U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine announced that $95,560,265 in federal funding is going towards helping Virginians get safe and affordable homes.
“We’re glad to see these federal funds go toward providing housing resources for individuals who are struggling to stay afloat amid COVID-19,” said the Senators. “We will continue to push for federal assistance to better support Virginians in these challenging times.”
