A former neo-Nazi leader was sentenced to more than 3 years in prison Tuesday for his role in a conspiracy to target a Black church, a Cabinet member and more than 100 others with bogus bomb threats and 911 calls. U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady imposed the 41-month sentence after ruling 27-year-old John Cameron Denton’s actions should be considered a hate crime. The sentence was less than the 5-year term sought by prosecutors but more than the 18-month sentence sought by Denton’s attorney.

Klompen Classic Returns In Person This Week

After going virtual in 2020, an annual tradition returns to Pella to kick off Tulip Time festivities this week. Crossroads of Pella Executive Director Jim Hibma says the Klompen Classic 5K run/walk hosted by Crossroads of Pella traditionally brings together more than 2,000 participants annually, and while the event won’t be 100% back-to-normal with COVID-19 mitigation strategies in place, it will mark a return to a collective event on Wednesday. A virtual option remains for those choosing not to participate with the in-person race. The Klompen Classic opens with the Kids Fun Run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on May 5th at the corner of West 1st Street and Union Street near First Reformed Church. The 5K will start shortly after at 7:00 that evening at the same location, with a new route planned this year.

Ernest Eugene Lemmert, age 70 of Prairie City, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Every Step Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021, at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 from 6:00-8:00pm at the church.
