Biden Admin Urges Afghanistan to Cooperate with Taliban

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price encouraged the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to “engage in serious negotiations” to bring peace to Afghanistan on Tuesday, urging them to work together against the Islamic State the day before.
The Taliban considers itself the legitimate government of Afghanistan, dismissing the actual government as a usurpation. Kabul maintains a mirror image stance and considers the elimination of Taliban jihadist violence one of its primary goals. The two agreed this week, however, to a ceasefire in observance of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Saleh on CBS Says US Legitimized Taliban, Must Remain Engaged
Afghanistan s First Vice President Amrullah Saleh in an interview told CBS News said it was the American government that legitimized the Taliban in the first place, and now Afghans need the United States to remain engaged, even if it s not in the same form as the last 20 years.
“The United States legitimized them. The Doha office is a creation of the United States. Getting Mullah Baradar out of the jail is an invention of the United States. Allowing them to travel here and there is with the help of the United States. Of course, Doha agreement is between the United States and the Taliban. They should be held accountable,” Saleh said.

Kabul, May 10 (EFE).- The toll from a recent bomb attack near a secondary school for girls in western Kabul increased to 85 dead and 147 injured, according to the authorities in Afghanistan on Monday.
The rise in the number of casualties in the car bombing in a Shiite-majority neighborhood, which has a large population of the persecuted Hazara ethnic minority, came as a result of a revised count of the casualties after the evacuation process.
“The latest information we have received shows 85 people were martyred and 147 others were injured,” Second Vice President Sarwar Danish’s spokesperson Muhammad Hedayat told EFE.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his First Vice President Amrullah Saleh on Monday sent messages of support to the Indian government and its people as the country battles a COVID-19 ‘tsunami’.
Infections spiked in India in the past 24 hours to another record high of 352,991 new cases.
Ghani tweeted Monday: “Our hearts go out to the Indian people & government as they fight the horrendous outbreak of COVID. On behalf of the Afghan people & government, we send our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones & wish a quick recovery to those who are suffering from the virus”
