LIBERTYVILLE, IL Suburban school districts across the Chicago area faced many tough decisions in the last year, and plenty of criticism, regarding their handling of schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic.
And as we head into Election Day on Tuesday, several school board races are packed with newcomers hoping to get their school district back on track. They year also brought strong divisions between those pushing for in-person learning during a year when students learned mostly via Zoom and others that wanted to keep their kids at home.

CHICAGO A new poll of Illinois residents indicates the public had mixed opinions on Gov. J.B. Pritzker at the midpoint of his first term in elected office.

The poll found just under 41 percent of respondents had a favorable view of the governor.
Pritzker was less popular than police officers (nearly 68 percent favorable), teachers unions (51.5 percent favorable), the Black Lives Matter Organization (48 percent favorable) or respondents local school boards (46.2 percent favorable.)

The six candidates gathered virtually March 4 for a forum in advance of the April 6 election. There are four seats up for election. According to 2020 figures from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), of about 4,750 students in the public school district in Chatham, 77.8% are white, 7.4% are of two or more races, 5.6% are Black, 5.2% are Asian and 4% are Hispanic. Meanwhile, 100% of teachers are white. Much of the forum discussed inclusion and teaching in culturally competent ways.
