Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says Home Affairs Secretary Michael Pezzullo is right to send the “wakeup call” to complacent Australians by warning the “drums of war” are beating.
In an Anzac Day message to staff Michael Pezzullo said the nation must strive to reduce the likelihood of war and warned Australia must prepare to send of troops to fight.
Mr Pezzull did not mention a specific country, but his warning comes as tensions with China continue to deepen.
“Mike’s privy to all the intelligence, I’ve known Mike for nearly 30 years, he’s a very sensible person, he understands the geopolitical games that are played,” Mr Conroy told Sky News.

Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy has highlighted the federal government is significantly behind in the vaccine rollout – saying it is more interested in the “spin” of saving the Australian public.
“The government are now caught in its own spin. Back in February, March they tried to pretend they had all this supply locked in, all these contracts made, they didn’t,” he told Sky News.
“Then they said that ‘we’re going to do it locally’, they’d be able to tool it up and pump it out, and it just physically wasn’t possible.

Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says Annastacia Palaszczuk got the COVID-19 response “dead right” and the Sydney media bubble must understand they don’t run the country.
On Thursday the Queensland premier called for further federal assistance for tourism operators for when JobKeeper ends in March – despite Ms Palaszczuk closing out New South Wales days before Christmas due to the outbreak on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
“They had a bit of a referendum in Queensland about whether they supported the Palaszczuk government’s approach to the pandemic and the big news for anyone who didn’t notice in the Sydney media is she won, and she won convincingly,” Mr Conroy told Sky News.
