The double mutant strain of coronavirus found in 10 states could be responsible for faster spread and the rising number of infections, the health ministry has said. A genome sequencing expert told PTI news agency on Thursday that he found a double mutation in 61 per cent of the total 361 COVID-19 samples tested between January and March this year.

In a major step to ramp up vaccine production amid the Covid-19 second wave, the Centre has approved production of Corona vaccines from the Maharashtra government-owned Haffkine Institute in Mumbai.
Since the past month, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had repeatedly requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow production of vaccines in the renowned institution in central Mumbai.
The central approval came late on Thursday night green-flagging the 122-year-old Haffkine Institute, Parel, to produce the Bharat Biotech s Covaxin for one-year under a technology transfer agreement.
Shortly after the announcement, Thackeray thanked the PM for the formal nod, sent by the Department of Science & Technology Secretary to state Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte of the approval for a period of 12 months.

Mumbai: Soaring above the 60K range,
Maharashtra on Friday recorded a new high of 63,729 infections and the second highest death toll of 398, with the state jumping past the 37-L mark, health officials said.
Shooting up to 63,729 new cases - a week after the previous peak of 63,294 (April 11), the state overall tally shot past the 37-Lakh mark, from 36,39,855 to 37,03,584, on Friday.
The trend was reflected even in
Mumbai which added 8,803 new infections, up from 8,209 a day earlier on Thursday - and the tally shot up from 553,404 to 562,207 to date, 12 days after the city notched the highest daily infections of 11,206 (April 4).

The Health Department on Friday stated that
Dharavi has recorded 36 new COVID-19 positive cases. The total number of cases in Dharavi reached 5,932.
There are 863 active cases in Dharavi. As many as 4,750 patients have been discharged from hospitals post-recovery from the area.
Dadar, on the other hand, continued to remain top of the chart with maximum
coronavirus cases in the G/North ward. With 102 new positive cases in
Dadar, the total tally reached 7,916.
Dadar hosts 2,019 active cases. On a happier note, 5,731 people have been discharged from hospitals post-recovery.
