First hearing on police reform report scheduled for Wednesday
Officials in Southold have set two dates for listening sessions meant to collect public input on the recently completed police reform and reinvention plan.
The meetings, which will be held virtually via Zoom, will be held Wednesday, March 17 and Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m.
The report is a culmination of over six months of collaboration among Southold residents, attorneys, law enforcement and other stakeholders that began in a year that shined a light on injustices embedded throughout society.
“The report represents an enormous amount of hours and incredible commitment” by task force members, said Carolyn Peabody of Orient, who chaired the Justice Review & Reform Task Force. “Everyone has come to this because they really want to make sure that our police department and the town’s dedication to ensuring public safety applies to everyone in the town in a way that’s equitable.”

Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart described a proposal to reform the county police as a complete reinvention of the Suffolk County Police Department. But some members of the public say it doesn t go far enough.
The first of three public hearings on the proposed police reform took place in Suffolk County Thursday night. A 1,000-page report compiled by the Suffolk County Police Reform & Reinvention Task Force was at the center of discussions.
The proposed changes come in response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo s executive order that all departments must examine ways to reform.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY Suffolk County is slated to receive approximately $286 million in federal aid under the American Rescue Plan, Executive Steve Bellone announced Thursday.
The money will help prevent layoffs and avoid the planned budget cuts to public safety, transportation and contract agencies that were expected to be implemented in July, Bellone said. The county will also be able to continue providing essential services to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
The funds come as an agreement with legislative leadership due to the unprecedented economic and fiscal environment created by COVID-19.
