Veterans’ Affairs Minister Darren Chester says it became clear over the course of last year it was important to veterans and families of veterans to have a Royal Commission as “part of the healing process”.
Mr Chester told Sky News while he initially believed having a national commissioner in place “into perpetuity” was very important, those he spoke to made the point a Royal Commission was needed first.
“Even though we had the support of RSL National and Legacy, and major suicide prevention organisations it did become clear during the year that we weren’t going to get that legalisation through the Senate,” he said.
“Many of the veteran’s families and individuals I spoke to made the point to me they felt they needed to have a Royal Commission first as part of the healing process for them and their families.
“So what we have today and the prime minister announced yesterday was the Royal Commission to do that retrospective work.
