Even through COVID-19 has hindered many groupsâ projects, a local junior ROTC has found ways to continue serving the community.
âWith COVID constraints, I remain amazed how the cadets are still able to accomplish so much,â said Lt. Col. Joe Walsh, the Senior Army Instructor at the Albert Gallatin High School JROTC program.
Beginning in mid-April the cadets took part in the Bataan Memorial March where over 34 cadets from Albert Gallatin as well as the Connellsville JROTC participated in a 14-mile foot march from the Dunbar VFD through Connellsville and back.
âAll-in-all it was a great way to remember what our WWII veterans went through during the actual Bataan Death March,â Walsh said, noting the cadets returned with sore feet, blisters and aching muscles.

Zanesville High School awarded Purple Star for its Military Support
ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Zanesville High School was presented the Purple Star Award for the school’s major commitment to students and families connected to the nation’s military.
31 schools in the state received the award. Two of the 31 schools were from the Southeast Region. In order to be awarded the Purple Star, schools must show how they support military families.
“We also do things like have parades, or we participate in parades, we have military appreciation nights at basketball games and football games, and we had a Veterans Day assembly, honoring the Veterans of the community,” Senior Army Instructor of JROTC James Delbrugge.
