Large prescribed burn conducted in South Brevard
The burn is expected to cause visible smoke in Palm Bay and South Brevard throughout the day.
The 1,000-acre burn was one of several being conducted in recent weeks to clear out underbrush and dead vegetation that could serve as fuel for potential wildfires ahead of warmer spring months.
A portion of the nature trail in the conversation area was closed Friday due to the controlled burns. Boat ramps remained open, but St. Johns River Water Management District officials said boaters should avoid vegetated areas.
Carefully managed burns help in perpetuating fire-adapted plants and animals, cycling nutrients and controlling tree diseases, according to wildlife management officials.
