Song titles such as Merle World and Honky Tonk Haze leave little doubt about this album s musical focus. While Jim Lauderdale s recent releases have extended his musical landscape from rhythm & blues to bluegrass, here.
more » he returns to the hard twang of the Bakersfield sound as popularized by Merle Haggard and Buck Owens in the 1960s. Fiddles and steel guitars frame roadhouse shuffles, though some of the slighter songs ( First Things First, Diesel, Diesel, Diesel ) sound like period-piece novelties. By contrast, the album s open-hearted balladry seems less nostalgic than timeless, with You ll Know When It s Right (cowritten with the legendary Harlan Howard), I d Follow You Anywhere, and Oh My Goodness representing Lauderdale at his soulful best. The first time Chelsea played Leeds United this season, resurrecting a rivalry from decades long gone, our 3-1 victory was not only one of Lampard’s best as manager, it was one of the most impressive Premier League performances of the season. And it put us smack dab in the middle of the budding early-season (and thus far too premature) title conversation.
We spent that night at the top of the table.
Incidentally, all the teams in that conversation back in early December have fallen precipitously in the three months since, and Chelsea actually remain best placed, with Spurs down in seventh and Liverpool one below them, even, having now lost six of their last seven matches, and with just three wins from their last fourteen (14!) league games.
We’re not out of the weeds yet, says CBCA Executive Director Christin Crampton Day. But it’s also: Wow, we’ve had a lot to think about and figure out over the past year. I think a lot of organizations are looking to the future and putting plans in place for when they can reopen. We’re excited to get this [campaign] back out there.
This is the CBCA s third big push in its broader Arts Through It All campaign, which launched last April, weeks after the coronavirus shutdowns began. For months heading into the holidays, CBCA encouraged spending on cultural groups. And while the Valentine s Day campaign won t include massive billboards and TV and radio ads, as that one did, the group has already started underwriting Colorado Public Radio spots and is stretching its budget, funded by Denver Arts & Venues, PNC Bank and other sponsors, as far as it can.
