(KNSI) – The Senior Dining Frozen Meal Expansion Project started incorporating frozen foods, developing pop-up sites, and partnering with food shelves to more than triple its capacity and preparing and delivering about 91,000 meals per month, up from 26,000 meals a month the previous year.
The nutritious frozen meals meet one-third of the recommended daily allowance for seniors and are packaged in microwave- and oven-safe containers.
The free meals are available in quantities of 10 and up to 30 per month for participates age 60 and older who’ve registered for the program.
Catholic Charities Senior Dining sites have provided seniors with food during the COVID-19 pandemic with modified quarantine practices. In November 2020, Catholic Charities was awarded the Minnesota Department of Human Services Circle of Excellence award, recognizing that the program had to change how it worked during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army breaks record with holiday gift card fundraiser
The Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army has partnered with Cub Foods and Hubbard Radio since 2008 to provide holiday food gift cards to those in need during the Christmas holiday to allow people to afford a nice holiday meal for their families, which can help make the holidays special. 10:00 am, Jan. 16, 2021 ×

Happy holidays, indeed.
The Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army set a new record with its latest holiday food gift card fundraiser by raising $29,000 for gift cards for those requiring food assistance.
The goal was also $155,000 in 2019, and thousands of hours by local volunteers manned red kettles at 13 locations in Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa and Pequot Lakes. But the coronavirus pandemic changed all that in 2020.
“There were a lot of groups that weren’t meeting to plan their schedule for bell-ringing. … But a lot of them also just said simply they weren’t willing this year to take the risk, and stand out there and do that, which we perfectly understand,” Curran said of some church and civic groups.
The Brainerd Lakes Salvation Army uses Christmastime donations to fund year-round programs that provide food, clothing, housing assistance and other critical services for residents in need.
