Dr. Michael Kearney, VNA Health’s Palliative Care associate medical director, has been at the forefront of our local Palliative Care movement in Santa Barbara County.
“Palliative Care is focused on what the patient’s needs are,” shares Dr. Kearney. “Yes, the diagnosis or prognosis is important, but that is not our focus. It is about helping the patient feel better, to manage their physical and non-physical symptoms. If they feel well physically, psychologically and spiritually, then their quality of life improves.”
Dr. Kearney’s first experience with palliative care and hospice care was as a medical student in the 1970s.
Central Colorado Humanists will host âThe Importance of Sleep, and Brain Diseases,â presented by Dr. Suzanne Lasage, MD/MHS during the March 7 Sunday Science Program.
Lasage is on staff at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center and specializes in neurology as well as sleep medicine and studies.
The Zoom program will present the functioning of the sleep mechanism and the history of neurological disease and sleep.Â
She will also discuss new research into sleep, dementia and cognitive function.Â
Lesage began sleep research at Northwestern University under Dr. Phyllis Zee; world-renowned authority on circadian disorders and later joined the neurology sleep program at Johns Hopkins doing research in restless legs syndrome and cognition and sleep disorders and continued her study at the University of Maryland.Â

Three-dimensional human stem cell-derived Mini Brain organoids can mature in a manner that is strikingly similar to human brain development, following an internal clock that guides their maturation in synchrony with the timeline of human brain development, as per a study at UCLA and Stanford University, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience Organoids are small, self-organized 3D tissue cultures that are derived from stem cells. They are capable of being crafted to replicate much of the complexity of an organ or to express selected aspects of it like producing only certain types of cells.

Vienna [Austria], February 5 (ANI): Ultrasound is not only used as an imaging technique but targeted pulses of ultrasound can be used as a highly accurate treatment for a range of brain diseases, for which there were previously only limited treatment options.
Over the last few years, several revolutionary techniques of this kind have been developed, primarily in Toronto but also at MedUni Vienna. The Viennese technique improves brain functions by externally activating neurons that are still functional.
Improvements can be expected in various neuropsychiatric brain diseases such as Alzheimer s, Parkinson s, stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and neuralgia. A review jointly written by MedUni Vienna and the University of Toronto and published in the specialist journal Advanced Science shows that the new treatments are already on the brink of broad clinical applicatio
