Mecklenburg County in-custody death

Updated: 5:37 PM EDT May 14, 2021 CHARLOTTE, N.C. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 20-year-old Karon Golightly a resident housed at Detention Center-Central.  Deputies said Friday that Golightly was found unresponsive at around 9:58 a.m. First responders were called to the detention center and performed CPR. Golightly was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 11:03 a.m.  Golightly was brought to MCDCC on October 31, 2019, and processed on state and federal charges. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Mr. Golightly,” said Sheriff McFadden, “our deepest condolences are with his family.” Family members were notified of Golightly’s death Friday afternoon. SBI will continue a thorough investigation as the medical examiner determines a cause and manner of death.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after gunfire erupted nearby children playing outside in a southwest Charlotte neighborhood, but police are asking for the public’s help identifying two more suspects involved in the shooting. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to Nations Drive on Saturday around 5:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, officers located two houses and four vehicles which had been struck by gunfire from more than 50 rifle and pistol rounds, according to officials. No injuries were reported from the incident. Through an investigation, detectives identified Christopher Gilmore as a suspect in this case. Gilmore was arrested Monday and transported for an interview with detectives. Police say thanks to an officer’s swift response, a 15-year-old boy was potentially saved after being shot multiple times in north Charlotte on Wednesday. Detectives say two juveniles are in custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office for their involvement in the shooting that occurred on The Plaza, and have both been charged with attempted murder. Police say they received multiple reports of shots fired on May 5th around 10:30 p.m, when an officer in the north Charlotte area heard the gunshots and responded to the scene.
