Families are encouraged to join the Museum of International Folk Art for the next Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art at 10 a.m., May 16. The online event features a grab-and-go art kit and access to a Zoom program that includes a story time and show-and-tell segment for children to share their art. The art kits are available for pick up the Friday and Saturday prior to the day of the event. The theme for the month of May is “All Together.” Register in advance here to receive the art kit, which will include instructions and supplies for the project. New Mexico Museum Of Space History Re-Opens May 7

ALAMOGORDO The New Mexico Museum of Space History, a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs (NMDCA), has announced that it will re-open to the public on National Space Day, Friday, May 7.
The Museum will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday at 3198 State Rte. 2001 in Alamogordo. A temporary reduced entry fee of $5 per person will be in effect, due to ongoing renovation and other projects. Capacity will be limited.
“We are all very excited to welcome the public back into the museum,” Executive Director Christopher Orwoll said. “While we have been closed, there’s been a lot of work going on and it continues, so we ask the public to pardon our dust as we continue much needed upgrades throughout the building.”

The History and Literary Arts department at the National Hispanic Cultural Center presents the latest online lecture in the series Perspectivas Modernas “Seeking Refuge: The Role of Expert Witnesses in Latin American Asylum Cases” via Zoom May 4. In this presentation, Kimberly Gauderman, a professor in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico, offers a description of the asylum system in the United States and the role of expert witnesses in cases for refugees from Latin America, focusing on the specific challenges faced by women and LGBTQ persons. LINCOLN How’d Billy get the gun?
It will be 140 years ago on Wednesday, April 28, that outlaw Billy the Kid shot jail guard J.W. Bell on a staircase in the Lincoln County Courthouse, setting in motion his escape from the gallows, and adding another layer of gloss to his legend.

Bell stumbled down the steps and out the courthouse’s back door before dying. Only moments before, the hapless guard and his prisoner, the Kid, had entered the building through that door after a visit to the outhouse.
