Unstable weather patterns produced severe weather in portions of southeast New Mexico on Memorial Day weekend.
National Weather Service forecaster Dave Hennig said low pressure in the atmosphere and low pressure at the surface brought strong southeast surface winds which created higher dew points to Eddy County.
“That gave us the instability that we needed for showers and thunderstorms,” he said.
Hennig said Carlsbad’s Cavern City Air Terminal received 84-hundredths of an inch of rain on Monday and a trace of rain on May 26.
“Yesterday (Memorial Day) most of the rain was to the east,” he said.
More severe weather was forecast through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Midland, Texas.
