Miami-Dade Corrections Officer Juan Llanes dies from COVID-19

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department announced Friday that Correctional Officer Juan Llanes died Monday after being diagnosed with COVID-19. He was 57 years old.
According to a news release from the department, Llanes was hired in February of 1988. He worked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until 1992 and was later transferred to the Metro-West Detention Center, where he worked until 2010.
Llanes last worked at the Hospital Services Unit.
“I met Officer Llanes in September 2011 when I transferred to Ward-D. A Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation officer who spent more than 30 years with the department died this week after battling COVID-19.
Officer Juan Llanes, 57, passed away Monday, the department announced.
Llanes had joined the department in 1988 and worked at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center until 1992 and later transferred to Metro-West Detention Center until 2010. His last assignment was at the Hospital Services Unit.

Bidding for the construction of the new complex is expected to start next month.
Plans to build a new jail complex in Miami-Dade County, to the tune of more than $400 million, continue to move forward despite objections from activist groups.
The bidding process for constructing the new complex is expected to start as soon as January, the Miami-Dade mayor’s office told WLRN. A final vote for the project is expected to come before the Miami-Dade County commission in the spring.
