SEATTLE With the position of mayor of Seattle being left vacant following Jenny Durkan s decision not to run for re-election, more than a dozen people have filed to campaign in the primary election.
Elected mayors serve four-year terms and are responsible for ensuring the laws of the city are enforced, while directing and controlling city officers and agencies.
Candidates with an next to their name are participating in the city s Democracy Voucher Program.

A Native woman who grew up in the Interior is running for mayor of Seattle. Colleen Echohawk heads a Seattle nonprofit that helps and heals indigenous people in need by affirming their cultural identity while providing housing and job training. She says the holistic approach could be applied to uplift all the people of Seattle.
Colleen Echohawk began her journey 44 years ago in Fairbanks, where she was born, and then Delta Junction, where she was raised. She concedes it may seem unlikely that a passionate advocate for indigenous peoples’ rights would grow up in a small Army town with very few Alaska Native residents. But she says it’s where she first gained an appreciation for community.
In December, Jenny Durkan announced that she would not seek a second term as mayor of Seattle. Weeks of speculation about potential replacements followed. But 2021 has brought more clarity. While none of our Very Serious candidates have yet entered the race, a bunch of others have. Here s who s running for mayor of Seattle this year (in alphabetical order).
Henry Clay Dennison
The Socialist Workers Party candidate for governor in 2020 has put his name in for Seattle s top post. Dennison is a rail worker and member of the SMART-TD union; he s also worked as a coal miner in Alabama and West Virginia.
