NEW YORK, NY (April 16, 2021) SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, likely does not directly infect the brain but can still inflict significant neurological damage, according to a new study from neuropathologists, neurologists, and neuroradiologists at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. There s been considerable debate about whether this virus infects the brain, but we were unable to find any signs of virus inside brain cells of more than 40 COVID-19 patients, says James E. Goldman, MD, PhD, professor of pathology & cell biology (in psychiatry), who led the study with Peter D. Canoll, MD, PhD, professor of pathology & cell biology, and Kiran T. Thakur, MD, the Winifred Mercer Pitkin Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Why do we assume that diet plays such a major role in cancer etiology? And by “we,” I don’t refer to just the lay public, but to scientists as well. At least the initial idea stems from global variations in cancer incidence. Certain cancers occur at high rates in the US and Europe breast cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer while these same cancers, at least decades ago when these hypotheses were formulated, occurred at much lower rates in countries in east Asia, notably Japan. Other cancers, like gastric and esophageal cancer, had a reverse pattern.

Spring is a time to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air and see friends and family but that idea comes with a risk due to the COVID pandemic. A poll from Ipsos found over half (55%) of Americans report seeing family or friends in the last week, a pandemic-era high. Slightly lower level (45%) report going out to eat in the last week and over a third (37%) of Americans report visiting a park, beach, or other outdoor space.

I am always surprised that the most frequent question I am asked by a patient or family member after we discuss the diagnosis is, “What should he/she eat?” To be honest, I never know what to answer and usually mumble some platitudes. I mention this because I think it reflects the widespread belief that diet plays a major role in our health and well-being.
Eating is a huge and fundamental part of our lives from a cultural and anthropological perspective; our day revolves around our meals and snacks. And, in truth, diet does play a significant role in many aspects of health, such as diabetes, cardiovascular and renal disease, growth and metabolism, and so on.
