Alabama’s auto manufacturing plants are keeping an eye on a global semiconductor shortage that is affecting production around the world.
The shortage is being felt in the United States, with Fiat-Chrysler set to idle two North American assembly plants and Ford halting production in Louisville, Ky. Reports say Volkswagen is also considering a production slowdown.
The problem? Microchips are an integral part of modern automobiles, with some requiring up to 150 per vehicle. But the COVID-19 pandemic, as with other industries, first interrupted production of semiconductors, then amped up demand for them.
