HOUSTON – A Houston-area nonprofit organization is accepting donations of new bedding for children without a permanent home.
The Sanctuary Foster Care Services has collected pillows, sheets and blankets in hopes of helping foster kids, including those sleeping in CPS offices.
“We just jumped in to help and to make sure that we could support them in any way that we can because we know that everybody is trying to do the best that they can in this situation,” said Executive Director Amanda Boyd.
According to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the number of children in Harris County who spent at least two nights without a traditional foster care placement increased from 49 in May to 60 in June.

The residents, who ranged in age from 22 to 65 years old, were all transported to hospitals. Six people refused to leave the property as authorities converged, TDFPS representatives said in a statement.

HOUSTON – A Houston couple has been charged in connection with the beating death of a 3-year-old girl who had been placed in their care by Child Protective Services as a safety precaution, according to her mother.
Huey Hamilton, 53, and Shawanda Hamilton, 36, are each charged with injury to a child in connection with the beating death of Tarija Carter. The little girl died in January 2020, and it took months of investigation to determine the cause and circumstances of her death.
“This was a chronic situation,” said Harris County prosecutor Gilbert Sawtelle. “There were healed-patterned injuries all over her body and there was evidence of non-accidental trauma.”
