Sweden increases defence budget as a bulwark against Russian aggressive manoeuvres in the Baltic

December 20, 2020 Share On December 15, the Swedish Parliament voted in favour of the Total Defence Bill (Totalförsvaret 2021–2025) according to which Sweden will increase its military spending by 40 percent over the next four years as it seeks to boost up defence capabilities. Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist stated that an extra 27 billion Swedish kronor ($3 billion, 2.6 billion euros) will be added to the country’s defence budget from 2021 to 2025 marking an increase of 40%. Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultquist told the Parliament that before the series that this was going to be the largest investment since the 1950s. According to the portal DefenseNews.com, the plan will see the armed forces grow from the current 55,000 positions to 90,000 by 2030.
