Italy s Mario Draghi began detailed talks Thursday on the formation of a new government, a day after being parachuted in to restore political order in the virus-plagued country.
The former president of the European Central Bank (ECB) was slated to meet party leaders in Rome to sound them out about their willingness to support a national unity administration.
Outgoing Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, in his first remarks since leaving office last week, said he met Draghi on Wednesday and wished him good luck .
Conte said the country needed a political government that is solid and sufficiently united to tackle the urgent crises brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy s Mario Draghi began detailed talks Thursday on the formation of a new government, the day after being parachuted in to restore political order in the virus-plagued country.
The former president of the European Central Bank (ECB) opened discussions with party leaders in Rome on whether they would support a national unity administration.
Draghi, who famously vowed to do whatever it takes during the 2012 eurozone debt crisis, was brought in by President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday after the centre-left government collapsed.
He has support from some of the main parties in parliament, but the biggest the populist Five Star Movement (M5s) is not yet on board.

Rome, Feb 4 (efe-epa).- The outgoing prime minister of Italy, Giuseppe Conte, said Thursday that he hopes Mario Draghi forms a political government instead of one composed of technocrats.
The former president of the European Central Bank, who has been tasked by Italian President Sergio Mattarella to form an “emergency” government, began discussions with the country’s leading parties on the formation of a new cabinet on Thursday.
“I hope for a political government that is solid and has enough cohesion to be able to take political decisions, because the urgent needs of the country require political actions, they cannot be entrusted to technicians,” Conte said in his first statement since he submitted his resignation to the head of state on January 26.
