Almost 21,500 Kerry people on pandemic social welfare payments

That’s according to the latest data from the Department of Social Protection. This week (up to February 2nd), almost 18,500 (18,455) people in Kerry are getting the Pandemic Unemployment Payment. That is an increase of 158 people compared to the previous week when 18,297 people in the county got PUP as they had lost their job due to the pandemic. 244 people in Kerry informed the department they were closing their PUP payment this week and returning to work; that is up 36 from the previous week. The number of Kerry people on the Enhanced Illness Benefit due to having COVID-19 or self-isolating continues to rise.

PUP numbers increase by less than 1%

Industry and Employment Correspondent Almost 480,000 people will receive the Pandemic Unemployment Payment this week, an increase of 4,269 or less that 1%, according to the latest figures from the Department of Social Protection. The rate of increase in claims is slower than last week s rise of 3% - though the claims figure is still well below the peak of around 600,000 seen last May. This week s payments will cost just over €144 million, bringing the total cost of income supports under the PUP scheme since its launch last March to over €5.6 billion.    Around half of those availing of the scheme are receiving the top rate of €350 per week.

It s followed by Wholesale and Retail at more than 76,000 and Construction which has over 62,500. Over 23,000 people closed their PUP claims in January as they returned to work. Increase The number of people receiving a PUP payment this week represents an increase of 4,269 (less than 1%) on the 475,364 people paid last week. Dublin is the county with the highest number of people who are receiving PUP this week at 148,617. It is followed by Cork with 49,184, and then Galway with 25,452.
