SARTELL Pedestrians and bicyclists will return to Sartell s original river crossing in 2022, when the city plans to reopen a long-closed bridge and connect it to a new trail on the west side of the Mississippi River.
The $12 million project is part of the city s focus on improving amenities around the Mississippi, said Mayor Ryan Fitzthum. As we look at the river road project that s going to happen jointly with Stearns County in 2022, Fitzthum said, here is an opportunity for us to reimagine how that bridge might be used.
The bridge was the city s main crossing over the Mississippi River before the new Sartell Bridge was opened in the 1980s. The steel truss bridge has been closed ever since.
