Bad News, Chesapeake Bay Crab Population Hits 14 Year Low | 93 1 WPOC

May 25, 2021 Could we be in for a summer without crabs in the DMV? According to a Maryland Department of Natural Resources 2021 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, the local crab population has reached a 14 year low. They estimate that the current number of crabs in the Chesapeake Bay is right around 282 million, down from 405 million last year, and 594 million the year before. Juvenile crabs are even worse off, they ve hit a 31 year low. However, there is a little bit of good news, the number of spawning age females has increased to 158 million, well above the 72.5 million threshold. Females bigger than 2.4 inches can potentially produce this year, which is an important indicator of the health of the stock.

Felling of 120 acres of old-growth trees in Pocomoke State Forest proposed

Felling of 120 acres of old-growth trees in Pocomoke State Forest proposed May 25, 2021 POCOMOKE STATE FOREST, Md. – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is considering cutting down 436 acres of trees in the Pocomoke State Forest. This is a normal operation that they say helps preserve forest life. But the Old Growth Forest Network says the problem is that 120 of those acres are old-growth trees nearly 100 years old. Executive Director Joan Maloof says old-growth trees can often grow for hundreds of years, and help protect younger plants and the animals that live there. “As these trees grow, they compete with each other. The stronger ones win out and get larger, and the smaller ones stay in the understory. There are some species that just come into a forest that’s older because they prefer the shade than full sun,” said Maloof.

Missing Elmira children found, dad charged with custodial interference

View Comments Two Elmira children who were reported missing Sunday have been found safe, and their father is facing criminal charges. Around 6:45 p.m. Sunday, the mother of two children, ages 9 and 11, filed a report with police indicating the children had not returned from visitation with their father, according to the Elmira Police Department. The mother reported she feared the father was going to take the children out of state. An officer followed up on the report, but the children were not located at that time, police said. On Monday, investigators continued looking into the matter and determined the father, identified as Jonathan J. Gavazzi, had vacated his residence, had not been to work and likely left the area with the children.
