PIKESVILLE, MD The Maryland State Police on Sunday celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding as a statewide, full-service law enforcement department.
Officials say the idea was born of necessity. The dawn of the 1920’s brought a perplexing problem to the office of Maryland Governor Albert Ritchie. The advent of the automobile was providing criminals with the means to expand their criminal enterprises and the ability to quickly flee their crime scenes and travel out of the area to avoid detection and arrest.
Governor Ritchie proposed a solution that changed the landscape of law enforcement in Maryland. He decided a police force was needed that had statewide jurisdiction and would provide both criminal and traffic enforcement across the entire state of Maryland.
CENTREVILLE â With both children and adults spending more time online due to virtual learning and social-distancing measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maryland State Police is reminding those of all ages to be vigilant as it relates to internet safety.
According to the MSP Computer Crimes Unit, cyber tips concerning the potential sexual exploitation of children have increased considerably over the past year. Through Dec. 7, state police have received 5,433 cyber tips. This compares to 3,248 such tips for all of 2019.
Nationwide, cyber tips also have increased significantly over the past year. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received 18.43 million cyber tips between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2020. This compares to 11.28 million over the same period last year. This represents a 63.3% increase year-over-year.
ELKTONÂ â A former manager of the Cecil County Parks & Recreation Department is facing 15 criminal charges after Maryland State Police detectives raided his Elkton residence early Tuesday morning and allegedly found multiple child pornography files on his electronic devices â ending a two-month-long investigation, according to that law enforcement agency.
MSP officials identified Edward W. Slicer Jr. 70, of the 100 block of Friendship Road, as the suspect.
Slicer worked for several years with the county s park and recreation department as a manager and later as a grants administrator, before leaving in 2009, according to meeting minutes on the Cecil County Government website. A preliminary review of the suspect s electronic devices revealed multiple child pornography files, an MSP spokesman reported in a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon, about 10 hours after the raid at Slicer s residence had occurred.
