Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan’s response to the state’s single COVID-19 cases was “absolutely hysterical” but enormously popular, according to Sky News host Rita Panahi.
Premier McGowan locked down the state for five days starting last Sunday after a hotel quarantine worker tested positive to the UK-strain of virus.
Throughout the lockdown, WA only recorded that initial single case.
Ms Panahi said a lot of people knew Premier McGowan's approach “was always crazy”.
“This is just been an absolutely hysterical, over the top response but it has been enormously popular. He’s going to romp it in,” she said.
“Everything that’s happened in the last week isn’t going to take the shine off him.”

Premium Content Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the number of international arrivals allowed into Australia would increase as of this month, as questions were raised about human error in hotel quarantine. Caps for overseas flights will be expanded for NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia from February 15, Mr Morrison said. We must remember that our borders are actually shut, he said, following a national cabinet meeting. No-one can just come to Australia. Sky News contributor Gemma Tognini says Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan’s handling of the pandemic is “lowest common denominator politics” as the state is set to leave its five day lockdown.
“The narrative here has been constant; ‘we’ve gotta keep you safe, we’ve gotta keep the border shut, we can’t go anywhere’,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
Ms Tognini said the $500 electricity credit the WA government is giving to business owners will not help as it is estimated the hospitality sector lose $10 million a day.

Sky News host Andrew Bolt says Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan is a “goose”.
His comments come as Perth undergoes a five-day lockdown following the detection of an outbreak which came out of hotel quarantine.
Under the new full lockdown there are only four reasons to leave one’s home which include essential shopping, medical or healthcare needs – including compassionate requirements – exercise for only one hour with one other person, and work if you cannot work at home.
“All this because of just one worker – a single security guard at the hotel got the virus. And Premier Mark McGowan today admitted this guard had in fact passed it on to no one that they’ve so far found,” Mr Bolt said.
“There’s plenty we could say about this fiasco, this total fiasco.”
Mr Bolt questioned whether shutting down a city is “really the best way to deal with a small outbreak”.
“The New South Wales premier, who does try to keep her state open and still fight the viru
