The Leola man who made a name for himself by confronting would-be child predators and shaming them on social media has accepted a plea bargain to resolve a case in which he was accused of assaulting and restraining a woman last year. Justin Perry, 35, had been charged with simple assault, false imprisonment and harassment in the Sept. 30 incident. On Friday, he entered an Alford plea to the summary harassment charge in Lancaster County Court and was ordered to pay a $100 fine, plus court fees. The two more serious charges were dismissed. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty but is able to maintain innocence. In doing so, the defendant concedes the charge would likely be proven had the case gone to trial. It is a conviction.

An Ephrata man has been charged with arranging to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex after he drove his horse and buggy to a convenience store, where he was confronted and recorded by a Leola child-predator vigilante in April. Mervin Wayne Kinsinger, 25, was charged Friday with attempted statutory sexual assault, attempted corruption of minors and criminal use of a communications facility.  Kinsinger was expected to surrender to West Earl Township police on Monday for a preliminary arraignment. A message left Friday afternoon for his attorney wasn’t immediately returned. In his brash signature style, Justin Perry — who is known on YouTube and social media as Mr. 17540 for his Leola ZIP code — confronted Kinsinger at the Sheetz on Oregon Pike in West Earl on April 28.

Roads closed due to police incident in Warwick Township [update]

Roads were closed and residents were asked to use caution Saturday afternoon near Zook’s Mill Covered Bridge in northern Lancaster County, where officers from multiple Lancaster County police departments blocked off the surrounding area while they engaged in a standoff with an armed man, according to a police news release. A Northern Lancaster County Regional police officer, who spoke near the scene shortly before 3 p.m., said the county’s Special Emergency Response Team also responded. According to the Northern Lancaster County Regional police statement, around 11:40 a.m. that department was asked to assist West Earl police with a man believed to be armed and dangerous.
