READY: The unit is set to open A £1.5 million extension to a west Cumbrian hospital will help to deliver the highest standard of care once it opens this week, believes Copeland s elected mayor. An extension to the Emergency Assessment Unit at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven has been created in order to improve patient care and experience when patients are being assessed to decide on their treatment plan. The Same Day Emergency Care Unit, which is opening tomorrow, includes an ambulatory care area, procedure room and 23-hour assessment unit. Copeland elected mayor Mike Starkie said: “I am delighted to see the continued investment and improvement in our local emergency care facilities.

Lucy Rowley is the 2021 winner of the Olu Orugun Award, a prize given annually to a physician associate student from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) to honour the late Dr Orugun. The much-loved doctor, which the award is named after, was an associate medical director and consultant physician at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC), and passed away in 2017. The award is given each year to a student who has shown dedication, compassion, teamwork and resilience in their work – qualities that Dr Orugun was known for during his time as a consultant physician at West Cumberland Hospital.
