California moves to adopt historic $6 billion broadband plan

July 15, 2021 After decades of advocacy and a pandemic year that forced schools to shift to online instruction, California is preparing to make its largest investment in expanding public broadband access to date. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state lawmakers announced their plans for how to spend the $6 billion that California is allocating for broadband in the 2021-22 budget on Monday. The plans are detailed in AB 156, known as the broadband trailer bill, legislation that outlines in detail how the internet investment should be spent. The state Senate passed the bill unanimously on Thursday, and it now awaits Newsom’s signature. “The pandemic more than demonstrated the necessity for every Californian to have reliable access in order to function in today’s world,” said Sen. California Teachers Unions Team Up With Democrats To Mask Students In Half-Hearted Return To School California teachers unions are teaming up with Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom to keep COVID-19 restrictions on learning even after students return to in-person schooling this fall. While children only represent 13 percent of all COVID-19 cases and a much smaller percentage of total deaths, the state’s health department and Newsom are requiring all children in government K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status, to wear a mask in school this fall. “15% of our population remains without the option for vaccination (children under 12 years old are not yet eligible) and risk for COVID-19 exposure and infection will remain until we reach full community immunity,” the guidance states.
