NHS BOSS SIR SIMON STEVENS TO STEP DOWN Sir Simon Stevens is to step down as the head of NHS England and become a peer, the UK government has announced. After seven years in the role, Sir Stevens will leave on 31 July having overseen the COVID-19 vaccination rollout to all adults. Sir Stevens has previously been vocal about the greater need for the NHS to invest in technology and diagnostics and has encouraged the use of AI and machine learning within the NHS. In December 2020, Sir Simon confirmed 11 more parts of the country will be formally designated integrated care systems (ICS), servicing a combined population of 14.5 million people.

Covid: One dead at Brighton and Sussex Trust in 24 hours

NHS England figures show 421 people had died in hospital as of 5pm on Monday. That was an increase of one compared to Sunday, when there were 420. It means there have been 14 deaths in the past week, down from 22 the previous week. The victims were among 10,673 deaths recorded across the South East. At East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, five new coronavirus deaths have been recorded. The new figures mean there have been 31 deaths in the past week, down from 37 the previous week. It comes days after the area saw the number of cases rise by 145. Elsewhere, NHS England figures show 444 people had died in hospital at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as of 5pm on Monday.
