Communications companies spread awareness of pending dialing change

Communications companies spread awareness of pending dialing change By Steve Limtiaco The island’s three telecommunications companies this week started a united effort to inform customers about a pending change in the way local numbers must be dialed, requiring the use of the island’s “671” area code. The U.S. will use 988 to connect to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, similar to the way 911 currently is used to contact the police and fire department in an emergency. The federal government approved the plan last July as part of an effort to elevate the response to mental health issues. Some of Guam’s existing assigned phone numbers start with 988, which means trying to call those numbers could mistakenly direct callers to the suicide prevention line unless the island’s 671 area code is dialed first. More than 80 area codes across the nation face the same issue, and also must change the way their local numbers are dialed.
