City-wide Clean Up Day draws nearly 1,500 volunteers

RAPID CITY, S.D. All week, Rapid City residents have been commemorating Earth Day by taking an active role in keeping the city clean.
If you were out in town over the weekend, you might have seen groups of locals in yellow vests cleaning the streets of Rapid City for Cleanup Day. That included picking up old water bottles, soda cans, and lots of plastic. While it’s not New York City, it took nearly 1,500 volunteers throughout the week to get it all cleaned up.
“It’s not just one day a year, it’s everyday,” said American Postal Worker Union member, David Becker. “We just have to take a little bit of initiative, and just take some pride in where we live. We live in this area. It’s our place to enjoy it and do everything that we can, just to keep the area clean, and our environment clean.”

RAPID CITY, S.D. During the cracker barrel, just outside Western Dakota Tech, a group of activists showed their opposition for House Bill 1217.
Last Wednesday, the South Dakota House of Representatives approved the bill, which prevents transgendered girls from participating in female sports in public schools and colleges.
Outside of WDT’s facility, two groups of LGBT supporters could be seen with rainbow flags and signage opposing what they consider to be a targeted bill.
The group believes the bill is arbitrary and would only prove to be detrimental to students who oftentimes are just looking for acceptance.

RAPID CITY, S.D. On the minds of many at the Western Dakota Tech cracker barrel was marijuana legislation.
While Amendment A works through court, legislators have been proposing work-arounds that would prepare them for the eventual legalization.
Most recently, Senate Bill 187 – proposed by State Representative Mike Derby – was passed out of the Senate. At a vote of 19-16, the bill would provide the sale of adult use retail marijuana.
But Derby stresses the bill will not legalize the use or sale, but would instead provide the framework for use and sale once legalized.
“So we’re trying to create a safety net, a framework using existing statute and businesses that already sell adult use products throughout the state of South Dakota. I think we’re all on the same page, we want to maximize revenue for the state of South Dakota, we want to get rid of the black market as much as possible, we want to provide local control, and we want to u

LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit organizations, partner organizations and allies will be taking their opposition to anti-trans legislation to the streets in cities across South Dakota tomorrow morning (Feb. 27).
The statewide marches are in protest of House Bill 1217, legislation that would ban transgender women and girls from competing on the sports teams that match their gender identity. The bill will be heard in a Senate Committee as early as next week.
“Year after year, issues that matter most to South Dakotans have been ignored as some lawmakers continue to introduce anti-trans legislation intended to codify discrimination in our state,” said Susan Williams, executive director of the Transformation Project Advocacy Network. “It’s time to defeat discriminatory bills like House Bill 1217 and fight for policy that respects and protects trans South Dakotans.”
