Walz and Former Senator John Arthur Smith will be conferred their honorary doctorates along with the more than 250 graduates making up the Western New Mexico University class of 2021. This little one got a little extra surprise Friday just before the Western New Mexico University commencement ceremonies at Ben Altamirano Field as he got a high-five from Rawhide, the WNMU mascot. More than 350 students graduated this spring, with 150 choosing to participate in person and about 100 choosing to stay remote during the hybrid ceremony.
More than 350 students earned degrees from Western New Mexico University in spring 2021, and the Mustang community celebrated through a hybrid commencement ceremony Friday.
Of the graduates who received diplomas from WNMU this spring, about 250 chose to participate in the commencement ceremony, with 150 walking in person at Ben Altamirano Stadium and 97 turning their tassels over Zoom.

A year ago, high school seniors didn’t get to celebrate with a prom or a normal graduation, and students at Western New Mexico University celebrated getting their degrees virtually from their homes, or wherever else they had a mind to.
With vaccination rates rising and the calendar moving into May, it’s time to start thinking about proms, senior days and graduations.
For WNMU, in the last Board of Regents meeting, President Joseph Shepard said that 135 or so of the 2021 graduates wanted to walk in a normal graduation, while about 35 had decided to participate virtually. So WNMU opted for a hybrid ceremony, which was held at 2 p.m. today at the football stadium, with limited seating.
WNMU to present honorary doctorates to former regent chair, former state senator

SILVER CITY – Along with the more than 250 graduates making up the Western New Mexico University class of 2021, two community members will receive honorary doctorates during the hybrid commencement ceremony at 2 p.m .Friday, May 7.
Receiving Honorary Doctorates of Laws are former WNMU Regent Chair Jerry A. Walz and former District 35 Sen. John Arthur Smith.
Walz is a Silver City native and WNMU graduate who excelled as a newspaper editor in his early career and as an attorney since 1980. For a dozen years, he was an instrumental member of the WNMU Board of Regents, having served as board chair multiple times and playing a key role in the hiring of current university president Joseph Shepard.

SILVER CITY, N.M. – At Western New Mexico University, the individual members of the spring class of 2021 will get to choose how they celebrate their accomplishment. A hybrid commencement ceremony on Friday, May 7, will give graduates and guests the option of participating virtually or in person.
The outdoor ceremony will take place at Ben Altamirano Stadium, where capacity will be limited. Every graduate who opts to participate in the spring 2021 commencement ceremony in person gets to invite four people to be admitted to the stadium. An e-ticketing system will ensure graduates can provide entry documentation for the family members and friends of their choice.
