MAQIS seizes ornamental plants from Taiwan found with pests 27 Apr 2021 / 12:54 H. SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) seized 5,000 ornamental plants of the podocarpus macrophyllus type from Taiwan, worth RM18,350, in West Port Klang, yesterday. Selangor MAQIS director Zamri Hashim said the plants, weighing 6,690 kilogrammes, were seized after they were found to have pests during a routine inspection at 3.30 pm yesterday. “The case will be investigated under Section 14 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011 for importing agricultural products believed to have pests, diseases or contaminants. “The offence provides for a maximum fine of RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to six years or both, and for the second or subsequent offence, a maximum fine of RM150,000 or imprisonment not exceeding seven years or both, upon conviction,” he said in a statement today. –Bernama

SHAH ALAM (Bernama): A Turkish crewman on a tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) died, and three others are reported in critical condition after they were believed to have inhaled ammonia in international waters off West Port Klang on Tuesday (April 6). Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy director (operations) Maritime Commander Norihan Ngah, who confirmed the matter, said the agency was alerted by a shipping agent at about 11pm Tuesday. Following which, members of the Selangor MMEA, together with the Hazardous Material Unit Team (Hazmat) of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, went to the location the tanker, MV Hamburg DW, had anchored, southwest of Pulau Selat Kering, at about 3am wednesday (April 7), to pick up the victims.
