Top 10 stories of 2020: Pandemic, scandal, strife made news in Macomb County

When the calendar turned to 2020, chances are unless you were an epidemiologist you probably had no knowledge of COVID-19. By mid March, this coronavirus disease would completely upend life as we know it in Macomb County and around the world. Recently, Macomb Daily writers and editors held a meeting (virtually, of course) to sort out the top 10 news stories of 2020. Not surprisingly, the onset of COVID-19 and all that came with it was voted no. 1. - Advertisement - It was a pretty obvious choice in a year that came with lots of important news, including the disgraced resignation of a longtime Macomb County official, racial unrest, political strife in the county’s largest city and an election that stamped Macomb as a solidly red county with Republicans seizing control of county government.

How to spend a holiday solo amid coronavirus pandemic

Connie Kelly will be eating ham for a while. That’s what happens when you have your holiday entrée and are the only guest of honor. It’s been a lonely year during restrictions in response to the novel coronavirus outbreak, and the holiday season feels perhaps distinctively so as Americans stay home from their usual gatherings amid a spike in cases.   For some, like Kelly, 77, of West Bloomfield Township, this might mean seeing no one at all, at least in person. For folks like her, it is important to have a plan to find a little bit of joy or connection, mental health experts say.

Pedestrian critically injured when hit by vehicle in West Bloomfield

A 59-year-old West Bloomfield man was critically injured Tuesday night when he was hit by a vehicle while walking along Haggerty Road in West Bloomfield Township, authorities said. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the man was in the roadway near Crumb Road, just north of Maple Road, when he was struck by a 2019 Dodge Ram. The area has minimal lighting and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothes, the sheriff’s office said. The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 44-year-old West Bloomfield woman, was not injured. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

Police: Commerce Township home, drug lab explodes

In September, an explosion and fire destroyed another Commerce Township house on the 3000 block of Abutus Street. In a similar manner, officials said the house was a marijuana growing operation, and highly-flammable tanks of butane gas exploded and caused the fire, the Free Press reports.  Fire officials said the explosion was so powerful that it blew large bits of shrapnel across the street, and officials rescued two men in their 20s from the fire.  Contact Slone Terranella at STerranella@freepress.com and follow her on Twitter @SloneTerranella.  Support local journalism here.
