West Virginia Northern Community College Gets $500K for EMT, Paramedic Training | News, Sports, Jobs

WHEELING Local fire and emergency departments now won’t need to send members out of the area to get EMT and paramedic training. West Virginia Northern Community College announced Wednesday it has received a $500,000 grant from the West Virginia Community and Technical College System to offer EMT and paramedic training on all three of its campuses Wheeling, New Martinsville and Weirton. There are presently no regular programs of study for paramedics offered in the Northern Panhandle. Those aspiring to be paramedics had to travel to Pierpont Community and Technical College in Fairmont, West Virginia, or take a class at Belmont College in St. Clairsville when they were available.

WHEELING The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics is looking to establish a relationship with the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport. Ohio County Commissioner Zach Abraham, who recently formed the Ohio County Airport Authority board, spoke at this week’s commission meeting of a recent visit by PIA to the airport. “They came to the airport just to see what kind of educational opportunities we could look at for the airport,” Abraham said. “They actually partner or set up their facilities at these airports.”

Staff Writer Soroptimist International of Wheeling is honoring two working mothers with “Live Your Dream” scholarships to help them with education, home and childcare needs while they work and go to school. Alexandria Dingess, a Fairmont, West Virginia resident, is a nursing major at West Virginia Northern Community College who will receive $2,000 from SI of Wheeling. Allysa Shelley, of Warwood, studies business administration at West Virginia Junior College in Morgantown, and will receive $1,500. She has plans to someday start her own business, said Barb LaRue, co-president of SI of Wheeling and a member of the club’s “Live Your Dream” committee.

Staff Writer Photo Provided Participants in Jobs & Hope West Virginia’s Substance Use Disorder Crisis program received classroom and hands-on training last week for forklift operator certification. Practical safety and operation training took place outdoors in the parking lot outside of WVNCC’s Industrial Technology Center this past week. Participants in Jobs & Hope West Virginia’s Substance Use Disorder Crisis program took a big step forward with the help of training made available at West Virginia Northern Community College this past week. WVNCC recently partnered with Jobs & Hope WV to provide their participants with training to get back into the workforce. In a matter of weeks, WVNCC was able to quickly set up a forklift operation training program through its Economic and Workforce Development Department to help provide the training sessions.
