There’s a new election law in Florida. Here’s how it will affect the way you vote Mark Harper, The Daytona Beach News-Journal © File Election
Whether in support or opposition, voices are loud in reaction to the new law signed Thursday by Gov. Ron DeSantis addressing elections in Florida. Beneath the shouting about Senate Bill 90, though, are some substantive changes. Here’s a primer on how the new law will change voting in 2022 and beyond.
Does the new voting law make it more difficult to vote by mail in Florida?
Yes, in a few ways. For starters, when requesting a mail ballot, you must also now provide the Supervisor of Elections Office with your driver’s license number, ID card number or the last four digits of your Social Security number.
I voted by mail in Florida in November. For me, what changes?
Previously, if you requested a vote-by-mail ballot, you would get one not just for that cycle’s elections, but for the next election. So if you requested mail ballots in 2018, you would have gotten them for 2018 and 2020. Under the new law, you must request mail ballots for each election cycle, although anyone with a standing request “is deemed sufficient for elections held through the end of the 2022 calendar year.”
Can vote-by-mail ballots in Florida still be delivered to a drop box, rather than mailed?
Yes, but those boxes will be less accessible. Instead of being there 24/7, drop boxes will now only be available during early voting hours and must be monitored in-person by an employee of the supervisor’s office. The drop boxes may only be placed at the supervisor’s office or outside early voting sites. And the law also specifies when drop boxes must be emptied and the chain of custody that must be followed

After the governor’s announcement suspending all remaining local COVID-19 mandates, Osceola County suspended their emergency ordinance that required face coverings in public, but they’re still requiring masks inside their facilities.
The governor’s executive order doesn’t overrule the mandates in federally run facilities, like courthouses or the airport, but the way it’s written, it says it does impact city and county governments.Sign up for our Newsletters
We reached out to Osceola County officials and repeatedly asked to speak with the county attorney regarding how they’re able to keep a mask mandate in their facilities when the governor’s executive order suspends all local mandates. We were told the attorney is unavailable but were sent this statement saying:
