Mono’s Council heard a strong and informative presentation from Alethia O’Hara Stephenson, president of the Dufferin County Canadian Black Association (DCCBA) on Tuesday (Feb. 23) during their regular meeting.
Established in June of 2020, the Association was initiated primarily, to support the ever-growing Black population in Dufferin County.
Black people, including those of African descent as well as individuals from the Caribbean and the Latin diaspora represent the largest visible minority group in the County. Currently they form 3 per cent of the total population.
O’Hara Stephenson notes that this, “sets the stage for the need to have an established Association that can advocate and represent, the needs of the Black community Dufferin County.”
It was listed at $500,000. After 53 offers, it sold for $801,000. Neighbours in the area said they weren t surprised, saying they ve noticed a hot market in Waterloo Region. I knew this would cause some disruption in real estate in our region, for the sole fact that it s a semi-detached home, said Dan Porlier, the broker behind the sale. Statistics Canada said Waterloo Region had the fastest growing population in Canada in 2020 as more people looked to move out of big, urban areas. Waterloo Region re-entered the province s red control tier on Tuesday as the provincial stay-at-home order came to an end. The region fell into the red control tier, which is the highest a region can be before entering the grey lockdown tier.

Students and teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), along with others across the province expecting a break next month will be waiting a little longer as government postpones March Break to April.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement last Thursday (Feb. 11) that the weeklong break for students and teachers, which was originally scheduled for March 15 to 19, would begin on April 12.
“Postponing March Break, not cancelling it is an important way that schools can help to limit community transmission,” said Lecce.
“I recognize that this is one more change in the year that has been challenging for so many students and our education staff who continue to work so hard, it is one made on the best advice of Public Health officials to keep them safe and to keep our schools open in this province.”
