Dufferin County Canadian Black Association presents to Mono Council

February 26, 2021   ·   0 Comments By Peter Richardson, Local Journalsim Initative Reporter Mono’s Council heard a strong and informative presentation from Alethia O’Hara Stephenson, president of the Dufferin County Canadian Black Association (DCCBA) on Tuesday (Feb. 23) during their regular meeting. Established in June of 2020, the Association was initiated primarily, to support the ever-growing Black population in Dufferin County. Black people, including those of African descent as well as individuals from the Caribbean and the Latin diaspora represent the largest visible minority group in the County. Currently they form 3 per cent of the total population. O’Hara Stephenson notes that this, “sets the stage for the need to have an established Association that can advocate and represent, the needs of the Black community Dufferin County.”

After having just returned to school, students in Waterloo Region will remain home on Monday for the second time in a week. Last Tuesday, schools in the area were shuttered after a heavy snowfall and on Monday, Mother Nature is providing a repeat performance. The move also means that daycare centres inside schools in Waterloo Region will be closed. In Guelph, buses have been cancelled but schools remain open.

March Break postponed for students and teachers across the province

February 18, 2021   ·   0 Comments By Paula Brown, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Students and teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), along with others across the province expecting a break next month will be waiting a little longer as government postpones March Break to April. Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement last Thursday (Feb. 11) that the weeklong break for students and teachers, which was originally scheduled for March 15 to 19, would begin on April 12. “Postponing March Break, not cancelling it is an important way that schools can help to limit community transmission,” said Lecce. “I recognize that this is one more change in the year that has been challenging for so many students and our education staff who continue to work so hard, it is one made on the best advice of Public Health officials to keep them safe and to keep our schools open in this province.”
