Pride flag vandalized at Catholic school, Guelph police investigating

  GUELPH Guelph police are looking into an incident that involved a Pride flag being taken down at a Catholic school and vandalized. The incident, however, has prompted a colourful response by many in the community on Saturday. Rayden Ballah and a group of teens saw the post online about the flag and decided to respond by putting out a positive message with chalk on a sidewalk. “We saw it and we knew we had to do something about it, we have to protest,” they said. David Cameron noticed the Pride flag down at Sacred Heart Catholic School around 6:30 a.m.

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH) announced the decision to allow the local Section 22 Order to expire, and continue with the provincial order on Thursday (April 15). “With the Province’s announcement this week that all schools will move to remote learning, the local Section 22 Order issued by Dr. Nicola Mercer will not be extended (and will expire on Sunday, April 18),” said Danny Williamson, communications specialist with WDG Public Health. “This will ensure there is no confusion between local and provincial guidance on schools.”

Both the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health and UGDSB issued press releases late Monday (April 5) evening notifying that the change would go into effect starting April 7. “I wish this step was not required,” said Dr. Nicola Mercer, medical officer of health and CEO of WDG Public Health. “I know the tremendous burden this places on families in our region. The growing number of cases across the province and the severity of the COVID-19 variants of concern places all of us at risk.”

Correction: This story initially said schools were closed in Guelph when in fact, many are open. Buses have been cancelled. After having just returned to school, students in Waterloo Region will remain home on Monday for the second time in a week. Last Tuesday, schools in the area were shuttered after a heavy snowfall and on Monday, Mother Nature is providing a repeat performance. The move also means that daycare centres inside schools in Waterloo Region will be closed. In Guelph, buses have been cancelled but schools remain open.
