N.J. family rescued after getting stranded on freezing mountain in Maine Updated 11:53 AM; A New Jersey family had to be rescued after hiking up a mountain in western Maine on Saturday after temperatures dropped and they couldn’t find their way down, officials said. The Freehold Township family spent the day climbing Tumbledown Mountain in Franklin County, Maine but were unable to locate the snow and ice-covered trailhead when it was time to descend, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said in a statement. The family called 911 at about 6:45 p.m and huddled together for warmth while waiting for help from the Maine Warden Service as the sun set and temperatures dipped into the low 30s, officials said. The five adults had neither proper clothing nor enough food, water or lighting to attempt to hike down, Maine authorities said.
