Public sector Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation has launched Parivarthanam, to deliver seafood to the consumers’ doorstep, and set up a dedicated portal.
The initiative has been launched with a view to improving the socio-economic conditions of coastal communities by forging closer links with industry and enhancing the livelihood skills of the youth along the coastline, an official spokesman said.
Sheik Pareeth, Managing Director of the Corporation, said Kerala has a long tradition of processing seafood to Scandinavian quality, but its benefits have been denied to home consumers. ‘We seek to change this scenario and redirect the processing technology towards the home market and establishing a quality supply chain to deliver fish to homes,” said Roy Nagendran, Team leader.

Conventional method involves unhygienic practice, says Angara
Minister for Ports, Fisheries and Inland Water Transport S. Angara said on Saturday that the Fisheries Department will promote the use of solar fish dryers in the coastal belt.
Speaking to media persons in Udupi, the Minister said that under the conventional method, fish is being sun-dried in open yards in an unhygienic manner. When fish is dried in solar dryers, nutrients can be retained and hygiene can be maintained. The matter would be discussed further in the department and later, a proposal will be sent to the government to promote it in the coastal belt.

‘Delay is due to time taken to design prototype of vessel’
With the Sri Lankan authorities resuming the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen for having crossed over the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), the focus turns to the pace of implementation of a ₹1,600-crore scheme, billed a few years ago as the remedy to the Palk Bay fishing conflict.
When Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme in July 2017 in Rameswaram, whose fishermen have been at the centre of the conflict, the Central and State governments expected that in three years, 2,000 trawlers would be replaced with deep-sea fishing boats having long lines and gill nets.
