OHIOVILLE – Zoning is a hot topic in the borough, and candidates for mayor and borough council have strong opinions about it.
The borough currently does not have a zoning ordinance, and in 2019 council proposed a zoning ordinance. The response was a resounding no from the community, and council eventually tabled it indefinitely. Many candidates running for Ohioville offices this year hope to keep it that way.
Mayoral candidates
In the mayoral election, current mayor Kevin Chaffee, a Republican, is running for re-election. Darryl Wolfe, also a Republican, is running against Chaffee. F. John Szatkiewicz is running for the Democrat nomination.
The change to school district-based funding would provide a sustainable and reliable source of funding for the library, she said. It would allow the library to offer expanded hours and services and deal with maintenance issues that have been put on hold for lack of funds.
If the proposition passes, there would be no automatic increases to the amount in the future; any requests for additional funding would be voted on by the community.
Bishop said she hopes people will realize the library is a valuable resource to the entire community – not just the village of Ilion – and will support the proposition. While the library’s activities have been curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff still found ways to serve the community, including taking orders for materials for pickup and providing weekly craft kits for children.

Health care providers are preparing for an increased demand for Covid vaccine now that 12-to-15-year-olds are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine. Schools are among those that are stepping up to fill that demand.
Washington and Oregon still have one hurdle before shots can be administered to that group. That’s approval from the Western States scientific group that gives one more layer of review to this week’s FDA decision.
Assuming it signs off, providers that have already been inoculating 16-and-17-year-olds will add the younger kids to their vaccine eligibility list.
Renee Rassilyer-Bomers from Swedish Medical Center in Seattle says her group realizes that the procedure of vaccinating children needs to be a little more thorough than just poking an arm.
