99 COVID-19 patients on ventilators, 423 severe cases

Taipei, May 25 (CNA) A total of 423 patients recently diagnosed with COVID-19 have been classified as having severe cases of the virus, nearly 70 percent of whom are over 60 years old, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Tuesday.

Angela Weiss/AFP/Getty Images Fewer than half of Americans social distanced in the last week the first time the percent has gone below 50% since the Axios-Ipsos poll began. The new poll data finds that 44% of Americans social distanced last week, down 12 percentage points from two weeks ago.  The poll, published Tuesday, was conducted May 21 to 24 and made up of a nationally representative sample of 1,102 US adults.   Those over the age of 50 and the vaccinated are the groups where some of the biggest changes are taking place in, but “regardless of gender, region of the country, partisanship, or race, people are socially distancing less than before.”

COVID-19: CPBL not to form team for Olympic qualifiers By Shelley Shan / Staff reporter Taiwan’s professional baseball league (CPBL) yesterday said it will not form a national team to compete in the final baseball qualifiers to be held in Mexico for the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo due to a severe COVID-19 situation at home and abroad, while the Sports Administration and the national baseball association are to decide today whether to take over and form a national team. The final qualifying round was originally scheduled to be held at the Taichung International Baseball Stadium on June 16. Five national teams were to participate in the competition after China withdrew its team earlier this month Taiwan, Australia, the Netherlands, and two teams securing the second and third places in the Americas qualifiers, which are to begin on Tuesday next week.

Taiwan extends epidemic warning to Level 3 until June 14

TAIPEI (The China Post) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC, 中央流行疫情指揮中心) on Monday extended Taiwan’s epidemic warning to Level 3 nationwide until June 14. Speaking at a daily press briefing, Health Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that all schools as well as public venues and business places, except for government offices and those that provide essential services, such as medical care, will remain closed until mid-June. The announcement followed the confirmation of 542 domestic COVID-19 cases that day, as well as two new imported ones and six deaths. Of the 542 domestically transmitted cases, 281 were newly confirmed cases and 261 were from a backlog of confirmed test results over the past several days, the CECC said.
